QCQ #2: Frankenstein
Quote:
“Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance.” (Shelley 117)
Comment:
This quote displays so much emotion from the creature that you begin to understand how hurt he was that Victor abandoned him without any care. The creature had to learn from these papers why people were so disgusted with him and was devastated by those pieces of information. All that he wanted was to be understood and not seen as a hideous creature but Victor in bestowing him with life has made it so that this can never be achieved. Another comment on this quote would be the creature saying his form is a more horrid form of Victors. This could be saying that when Victor formed the creature it was possibly in a distorted image of himself.
Question:
Why did Victor chose to create the creature in this horrid way and not trying to give the creature an appearance that is more reflective of himself? Does that speak to the corruption that Victor felt inside himself and that he chose to create the creature in a hideous manner because thats what he felt about himself?
One thought on “QCQ #2: Frankenstein”
Remember that Victor actually thought the creature beautiful before he brought it to life. I suspect that Victor was actually trying to create what he wanted to be in the creature. He wanted to make something good for humanity through a method to prevent death from lasting and wanted to form an “ideal” being as his exhibition.
