For the three CPB entries that I looked at two of them I could connect with my own on being related to the Victorian era and the fascination with Egypt. For my own CPB I chose to focus on this topic as it is an element that no other gothic novel we have read so far seems to include. There is so much mystery surrounding what who the mystery characters are and how The Beetle came to be in London. One of my peers entries discussed the anxieties that Victorian society had with Egypt as it went outside the mold or not having a “stable center”. I began to think about this and wondered if the anxiety stemmed from Victorian people always longing for structure and Egypt goes away from this, therefore leading to more anxiety from the people. It makes me wonder if the character of Paul Lessingham needed to break away from such a structured life that he found himself wrapped up in the ways of the Egyptians. Does he realize he made a big mistake in doing so? My own CPB I discussed more about how Victorians were fascinated with the magic and mystery that Egypt provided and so did Paul just want to experience that? Another one of my peers CPB entries that I analyzed discussed a different form of anxiety that Victorian society experienced and that was the New Woman. It will be interesting to see if and how this connects more into the novel and also how the male characters of Paul and Sydney disapprove or validate Ms. Lindon and her beliefs. She is a very knowledgable individual herself and it makes me wonder if that is the reason she is so fascinated with Lessingham and he with her?
