Marine Pollution
This course was taken during the Fall semester of my Sophomore year. It was the first ever Marine Affairs course I took after switching my major from Marine Biology. This course was one of my favorites taken at UNE because of the unique topic of the pollution of our oceans and not just from the typical forms of pollution you may think of. This course had units on from micro-plastics to derelict fishing gear to noise pollution. All forms of pollution being extremely detrimental to marine life and the ecosystems that exist in the worlds oceans. We had many great guest speakers come to the class, even the author of the book that we used as our textbook, Judith Weis. Also the different case studies that we did such one on the impact of the cat population in Hawaii effecting monk seals was super interesting. Overall this was a course that was very memorable and helped me in knowing that I had made the right choice of joining the Marine Affairs program at UNE.
“This course will introduce students to the types, sources, and effects of pollutants in coastal and marine ecosystems. We will study the cycle of pollutants such as oil, plastics, pesticides, fertilizers, and wastewater, from initial input in the marine environment, through biological and chemical processes occurring in the ecosystem, to final disposition or disposal. As an interdisciplinary seminar, we will explore course topics by applying a range of legal, policy and socio-economic disciplines. Classes will combine lectures, discussion, small group activities, guest speakers, and field trips as possible.”
